Part II: The Magic of High School Reunions

Jun 05, 2024
Dorothy Guy Bonvillain HS Reunion

I ended last week’s blog asking the question: What are your thoughts and feelings regarding high school reunions?  Some say, “I’m not interested. I’ve never attended my class reunion.”

If this is you, so be it; however, I still encourage you to read my blog from last week (May 29) where I describe the ‘magic’ of reconnecting with lifelong friends.

Let’s look at an example from history:

Vaclav Havel, the intellectual Czech Playwright, Statesman, and Dissident Leader, who in 1989, helped guide his nation through the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe, spent multiple periods as a political prisoner for subversion, his longest imprisonment lasting four years from 1979 to 1983. In 1993, a decade later, Havel was elected the first President of the newly formed Czech Republic.

You may be asking, “How is European history relevant to the magic of high school reunions?”

When Havel returned to his home country after a long period in forced exile, he described his delight at seeing his old, lifelong friends again. With keen observation, he noted:

“Their psyches were richer, fuller, and more vibrant with age.”

I could not find any better words to describe our LPHS 60th Class Reunion. There’s magic in celebrating milestones (BIG or small) with people who know (and were part of) your personal history. Reunions create within us a collective sense of celebration, an acknowledgement of the passage of time, and our personal growth along life’s journey.
