Know the Difference

Memorial Day

A large group of high school seniors were touring the Capitol in Washington D.C. on Memorial Day. Their guide asked, “What is the meaning of Memorial Day?” They discussed it among themselves, then offered, “It’s the day the pool opens!”

Studies show that only about 25% of Americans know the meaning or difference between Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Armed Forces Day.

Sadly, Armed Forces Day 2024 was this past Saturday (May 18). Very few Americans were even aware it came and went. It is celebrated annually the third Saturday in May, during Armed Forces Week and Military Appreciation Month. Veterans Day is observed annually on 11 November, a day set aside to honor all patriots who have served in the Armed Forces.

Memorial Day is the day we honor those who gave their life in service to America; yet, many unknowingly say, “Happy Memorial Day.” Most Americans look forward to a day off work to sit back and enjoy backyard BBQs, picnics, beaches, boating, and holiday excursions. Almost 1.5 million men and women have died so that you and I can enjoy these freedoms.

Memorial Day began during the Civil War when women began decorating the graves of soldiers who died in that war. On May 30, 1868, it was designated ‘Decoration Day,’ a day for placing flowers on Union and Confederate Soldiers’ graves throughout the United States. Over time, it became known as Memorial Day, a day to remember and honor all people who have died in defense of our country. In 1971, The U.S. Congress officially declared it a national holiday to be observed on the last Monday in May.

I am writing to remind us that freedom isn’t free. Many brave patriots have died so that we may live in freedom. There is nothing happy about it, beyond the recognition that so many have been willing to give their all for this country. On Memorial Day, let’s take time to think about the price of freedom, while we gratefully honor the ultimate sacrifice made by those who were willing to lay down their life in service to this great nation.
